There are many who doubtless regard Lydia as the subject and the sands as merely incidental;
or was she really the excuse to allow him to revel in painting water and sand as only he could do it?

The sands look very reminiscent of Bamburgh sands in the noth-east of England;
Painted possibly around the same time as 'The Shrimper'
The area is renowned for it's unique light along this north east coast.
