The model in this painting is Cecilia Green.

The River Ardeche, which runs through the department of the same name is a beautiful crystal clear mountain water running along volcanic rock.
Many holiaymakers from all over Europe come to the Ardeche for walking and in particular canoeing along the winding passes,
which are not only reknowned for their beauty, but can be most exhilerating through rapid sections of the river.

It is not uncommon for a small group to set off with canoes and travel along the river, camping overnight and continue the next day, to be picked up by a minibus at the end of their journey.
The River Ardeche can become quite ferocious at certain parts of the year, and flash floods can cause the water level to raise twenty feet or more in just a matter of minutes, as all the water drains off the mountains.

This original painting is by the River Ardèche Aiguèze some 15 minutes south of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc.
